Maryland’s sports wagering from smartphones and online websites dropped -20.5% in June, the second biggest drop since mobile betting started in November.

Combined, Maryland’s 10 retail and 10 mobile sportsbooks handled a total of $254.5 million in bets for the month of June, according to a monthly report released by Maryland Lottery Gaming. Mobile betting accounted for 95.8% of the total at $243.8 million. Retail sportsbooks handled $10.6 million in bets.

The heavy drop in the handle is normal for June as sports wagering enters the summer slowdown.

Retail sportsbooks paid $10 million in winning bets to players, while mobile betting paid $217.3 million, for a combined total of $227.3 million.

After paying out winnings, and other deductions, each sportsbook contributes 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs.

Sports betting overall generated $2.8 million in contributions to the state during June, down -39% from May ($4,650,711). Retail sportsbooks paid $91,242 with mobile paying $2.7 million.

Maryland’s sports wagering market launched with five retail locations in December 2021 at land-based casinos. Seven mobile sportsbooks launched in November 2022. As of the end of June, there were 10 retail locations and 10 mobile operators.

Fanatics Sportsbook became the 10th mobile sportsbook operator in the state in June. Additional retail locations and mobile sportsbooks are expected to be launched soon.

Under Maryland’s sports wagering law, the state’s Sports Wagering Application Review Commission is authorized to conduct a competitive process to award up to 60 mobile licenses and up to 30 Class B facility licenses.

Retail Handle

BetMGM Sportsbook at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill took the lead away from FanDuel in June. The retail locations handled $3.6 million in bets and paid out $3.4 million in winnings from that total.

FanDuel recorded a retail handle of $2.8 million in June, down from $4.9 million in May. FanDuel Sportsbook is located at Live! Casino in Hanover.

Just like in May, Greenmount Off-Track Betting in Hampstead reported the lowest handle for June. The retail sportsbook recorded a $50,253.66 handle but only paid out $42,102.54 in winnings bets.

Greenmount reported a $71,531.71 handle in May, paying out $62,579.44 in winnings.

Online Handle

For mobile online betting, FanDuel, the most popular sportsbook in most states, led the month of June. The sportsbooks app recorded a handle of $108.6 million and paid out $94.1 million in winnings.

In May, FanDuel’s mobile app led the month with a handle of $146 million. The sportsbook paid out $123 million in winnings to bettors.

Superbook Sportsbook, linked to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, had the lowest mobile handle in June. The sportsbook recorded a $442,469.03 handle and paid out $418,950.77 to winnings bettors.

Since the inception of Maryland’s sports wagering program in December 2021, $28 million has been contributed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund.
